Dowland Mini-Festival Part 1:
Commemorating the 400th anniversary of the death of John Dowland in February 1626:
Dowland’s lute songs, perfect musical miniatures, and new lute songs by Jonathan Woody. Songs Old & New features voices, lutes, and viola da gamba, alongside newly commissioned works by Jonathan Woody that place modern music in conversation with Dowland’s timeless songs. You’ll hear favorites such as Come Again Sweet Love, Flow My Tears, and other Dowland songs that run the gamut from joy to melancholy. Set to texts from the Song of Solomon, Jonathan Woody’s new songs combine the tonal richness of Dowland’s renaissance style with interesting shifts of texture and harmony, all in the name of exquisite expressiveness.
